How curiosity, ownership, and targeted mentorship helped a Business Analyst break into Payments.

Date:May 4, 2026

Over the past ten years, Darshan Parate has built a strong track record as a Business Analyst. He has guided digital transformations, untangled complex pension schemes, and found his way around wealth management and the insurance sector. But recently, he decided to step into a world that was completely new to him: the fast-paced, highly regulated payments domain of a major Belgian bank. His journey shows exactly what happens when you combine genuine curiosity with the right support. And why companies benefit from looking beyond their usual talent pools.

The catalyst: ownership and curiosity

Usually, when a large bank needs a Business Analyst for a critical payment system, it immediately looks for someone with years of specific payments experience. Darshan didn't have that. What he did have, however, was a decade of strong analytical experience and a genuine, unstoppable drive to figure out how the financial world truly works.

"Coming from a non-banking or non-payments background, everything was challenging and pretty new for me at the start," Darshan admits. "But I was always open to learning. I wanted to understand how real money actually flows from A to B behind the scenes."

He didn't just ask questions; he took his learning entirely into his own hands. Knowing he had a lot of catching up to do, he simply got to work. He made a deal with himself to read ten pages of a banking book every single day. "Every evening, I’d study topics like clearing, settlement, and R-transactions," Darshan recalls. "Sometimes I'd get completely lost in YouTube explainers until midnight, just to get my head around how those transaction flows actually work." For Darshan, the mindset is simple: "With every challenge, I also take it as an opportunity to learn."

The challenge: expanding the role

Switching to a new sector is about so much more than just learning a new set of buzzwords. You have to figure out a completely different company culture and take on a whole new set of responsibilities. At the bank, Darshan jumped right into the deep end of payments, translating complicated business needs into actual IT solutions. He had to figure out the bank's internal politics and unique ways of working, and do it fast. But because he already had such strong roots as a Business Analyst, things clicked fast once he grasped the basics.

His experience enabled him to look far beyond the standard payment flows. Recently, he even took on some intense, high-stakes regulatory projects. This shift clearly demonstrates his adaptability: banking regulations require a ruthless eye for detail and strict compliance. It shows that when your core skills are truly rock-solid, you can make a meaningful impact in virtually any environment.

The bridge: a guided learning path

Walking into a massive bank as the 'new guy' in a new field can feel pretty overwhelming. But Darshan didn't have to figure it all out alone. Having someone in his corner to bounce ideas off made all the difference. Instead of drowning in new information, he had a safety net, a support system that helped him turn his raw enthusiasm into practical, everyday skills.

The training sessions I followed focused primarily on the payments domain and general banking knowledge. But alongside that, I also received specific training on the bank's 'way of working' and stakeholder management. That was essential.

"But alongside that, I also received specific training on the bank's 'way of working' and stakeholder management. That was essential. It really helped me to perfectly align my own skills as a Business Analyst with the high expectations the bank had for me."

In the end, having this kind of targeted support made his big career jump feel remarkably natural. For Darshan, Projective Talent wasn't just an employer finding him a placement. They acted as a dedicated partner and coach. By figuring out exactly what knowledge gaps he had and actively providing the training to fill them, Projective Talent helped him step into his new role with total confidence.

Advice for the next generation

Now that he’s successfully made this transition, Darshan has some great advice for graduates or young professionals just entering the corporate world. His biggest tip? Don't let unknown domains intimidate you.

"Don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they seem basic," Darshan advises. "When you step into a new domain, your lack of experience isn't a weakness. It's a blank canvas. If you focus on mastering the core methodologies of your craft, the specific domain knowledge will naturally follow through dedication and continuous learning."

The takeaway: stop chasing unicorns

Looking back on the journey, Darshan really appreciates the people who trusted him enough to let him make this jump. It gave him the space to challenge himself and discover a completely new path in his career.

As Lenny Sluyts (Account Manager at Projective Talent) noted, "Darshan represents a very specific breed of professional. It’s that hunger for learning, for growing with a really clear goal to be successful or more successful every year. That's really Darshan. And honestly, that is exactly the kind of talent we actively look for at Projective Talent."

His story is such an important reminder for modern recruitment: the perfect candidate might not have the 'perfect' CV, but they definitely have the perfect mindset. When you look past rigid wish lists, hire for drive, and actually guide professionals with tailored coaching, you build experts who can confidently conquer new sectors.

And from our perspective? Partnering with someone as driven and dedicated as Darshan is exactly why we love what we do. It's an absolute privilege to watch talent like his truly excel.
